The present paper deals with the research method, i.e. the style of studies of Georgiy L’vovich Kurbatov (1929–2003 гг.), who was the famous Soviet and Russian Byzantine scholar, one of the best scholars of the early Byzantine city during the IVth–VIIth Centuries. The authors comprehend research method as a way of narrative in historical text, in fact — as a form of construction of the text, its structural composition, so, respectively, they try to explain the main essential features of Georgiy L’vovich’s way of thinking, main peculiarities of his scholarly work. The aim of this paper is to show how Georgiy L’vovich composed his texts, how he shaped the structure of his texts and how he established his own history writing-style. The authors presented as an example the Georgiy L’vovich’s massive study The Main Problems of Byzantine City’s Internal Development during the IVth–VIIth Centuries released in 1971 by Leningrad State University Press. For to analyze Georgiy L’vovich’s way of thinking the authors turned to traditions of Anglo-American analytical philosophy of history, its main and most famous representative is an American scholar Hayden White. Having compared Anglo-American traditions with French and German theory of history, the authors concluded that Georgiy L’vovich made a colligatory-procedural narrative, that is he considered the Byzantine city strictly as a range (set) of processes (mainly, social-economic processes), each process was established and arranged chronologically, as step-by-step development (deployment) of events during the time space, from the early stage to the late stage. The ground for this construction (colligation) was evidence of sources, which mention the single citizens, so, as presented in Georgiy L’vovich’s narrative, the actions of the citizens became the live examples of processes. Moreover, he artificially combined with each other a set of different processes, showed their interdependence and mutual penetration, close interrelationships. As a result, as the authors assume, Georgiy L’vovich made a coherent image of the time not from events, but from the processes.

This review of Richard Lachman’s «Capitalists in spite of themselves» shows pluses and minuses of the research. Also in the review actual historiography issues are discussed and neomarxist methodology came under criticism. The criticist argues that the key issue of the research is Marxist’s thesis of the distributive role of the authorities and economical reductionism. Accepting Pierre Bourdieu conception of social and symbolic capital, Lachman returns to the classical Marxist conception of base (economy) and superstructure (power, policy culture and other). The role of the symbolic, social, military, spiritual capital became downgraded and diminished. Benefit of the research is attention to the historical process in Italian city-states which set aside of the researcher’s attention very often. Also other form’s of non-classical form of medieval power and society structuring, the Holy Empire, the spiritual knight’s Orders, the city’s unions, etc. are left by Lachman unattended, because of their disengagement in transition to capitalist economy. His interesting conception of «vertical» and «horizontal» absolutism wasn’t developed because of the researcher’s inattention to non-material and mythological forms of power. In spite of references to Paul-Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu works, Lachman continues to envisage political power as a distributive structure. Being interesting and very informative, Lachman’s research inherits Marxist’s paradigm deficiencies.

The main attention is focused on the new and the old in formation of Luther as a theologian and interpretation of connection between Lutheran and medieval views by Oberman. Could the Reformation be interpreted as a «German event»? Was it the development of the medieval tradition? What was the role of the Luther’s family in development of his personality? In what way the young monk was affected by the late medieval spiritual practices? How Luther’s worldview changed and is it possible to date precisely the appearance of the Reformation doctrine? What is the role of the devil in his theology and what main discoveries during his biblical studies were made? At last, how the first Reformation events went and how did Luther split from the old Church, what are the external and internal circumstances of his apostasy. Reflections about his own past greatly influenced on Oberman’s interpretation of Luther. His book on the Reformer could be seen as his own confession. His thoughts are from positions of modern Luther studies. The wide scopus of academic works timed to the Reformation jubilee is made. The author marks out the most important idea of the book: Luther signifies the end of the Middle ages and beginning of the Modern era, but his personality was unchanged. He was the gifted man who managed to reopen Gospel for people and led them after him.

The article briefly describes four wheel-lock pistols of the beginning of the 17th century and several guns and pistols of the end of the 17th – beginning of the 18th century, made in Paris, Sedan and Saint-Étienne. Some of these guns were made by the best Parisian masters of the time, who had the king’s privilege to live and work in the Galleries of Louvre, namely Adrien Reynier and Jean Baptiste Laroche. The author focuses on details of construction and style of firearms, especially common for French gunsmiths of that period, such as «French» type of wheel-lock with separated mainspring and axis of a wheel, passing through the stock, a manner of decoration of barrels with golden incrustation upon the blued ground, light and elegant stocks, decorated with incrustation of silver wire, etc. Also the author gives brief notes about the gunsmiths, their places and dates of life.
