This article deals with the implementation of Lutheranism in Palatinate-Neuburg and in Electoral Palatinate by prince elector Ottheinrich (1502–1556) in an administrative and dynastical perspective. It asks how the prince tried to establish step by step the new Protestant order and doctrine in his two inherited territories with Church Orders that ended the confessional state of uncertainty in favour of Lutheranism. Ottheinrich acted as deeply religious monarch within the Holy Roman Empire and established diplomatic contacts to the French and English royal courts so that he became one of the most important opponents of the imperial policy. In spite of his short reign as prince elector he determined the political role of the Electoral Palatinate for the next decades in the complex confessional situation in the Holy Roman Empire.

The article «The Prämonstratensian Monastery in Belbuck — a Starting Point of Reformation in the Southern Baltic Sea Region» studies the role of the monastery in Belbuck near Treptow an der Rega in the former duchy Pomerania (today Bialoboki/Trzebiatow in Zapadny pomorze/West Pomerania/Poland) that was founded in the end of the 12th century by Premonstratensians from Lund. In the beginning of the 16th century there worked some very important theologians, friends of Johannes Bugenhagen, later on the friend of Martin Luther and a reformator of northern Germany and the Danish kingdom. His colleagues in Belbuck were Johannes Boldewan, Johannes Äpinus, Christian Ketelhodt, Andreas Knopken. Connected with the monastery was a woman monastery in Treptow, where lived Elisabeth von Meseritz (Elisabeth Cruciger). They all had a great influence on the Reformation and the stabilising of the Lutheran church from Copenhagen up to Riga. The monastery itself was since 1616 completely destroyed, but its history may be helpfull for better understanding of very various processes during the early time of «Reformation» in the southern Baltic Sea region.

Louis XIV and his palace — Vincennes

Sidorenko, M. A. Lyudovik XIV i ego dvorets — Vensenn [Louis XIV and his palace — Vincennes], in: Proslogion: Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Social History and Culture, 2019. Vol. 5 (1). P. 7295.

The study focuses on the history of the Château de Vincennes (Castle of Vincennes) early during the rule of Louis XIV, when the Palace of Versailles was not yet the principal royal residence, and the court often stayed in other chateaux near Paris or in the Loire Valley. Among those, the Château de Vincennes remains the least documented but, even being limited, its historiography stores evidence that the castle was then the preferred residence of the royal family and the court. As a support for this challenging hypothesis, note that Vincennes was mentioned in the story telling about the origin of the famous quotation of Louis XIV «L’état, c’est moi (The state, it is me)», which became a motto of absolutism. Thus, it is tempting to consider the Château de Vincennes as a possible competitor of the early Versailles, which was a place of great court festivities in 1660–1670. In order to prove or disprove the hypothesis, it is pertinent to pose several questions, each being applicable to historical studies of any royal residence. Which events during the rule of Louis XIV were related with Vincennes? How did that old residence of French kings help the Baroque monarch in pursuing his political course and creating a new society of courtiers subordinate uniquely to the throne? How far was the château built by previous kings useful for making representative the image of Louis XIV? Did Louis XIV use the Château de Vincennes for diplomacy and official ceremonies and what was its role in solving international problems?

Lurie, Z. A., Polyakova, M. A. John Bugenhagen’s Braunshweig Church order on the reform of education, in: Proslogion: Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Social History and Culture, 2018. Vol. 4 (1). P. 189216.

This publication is the first translation into Russian of an excerpt from the Braunschweig school order by Johann Bugenhagen and introduces the reader to the education reform as part of confessional reforms. School education, continuing the ideas of Melanchthon, is strictly hierarchical and prepares citizens for various ministries. The order also pays great attention to music education, which is directly related to the liturgical reform. In addition, Bugenhagen makes recommendations regarding the provision of schools, the size of the teacher’s salary and student fees, constantly recalling the need for “government” maintenance of schools.
