Mitrofanov’s article examines the problem of Avar ethnogenesis in the context of the work of the Byzantine historian Theophylact Simocatta, secretary of Emperor Heraclius (610–641) and modern historiography. Mitrofanov develops and deepens the provisions expressed in previous publications. The author draws on the research of the linguist E. Khelimsky, the Byzantinists Paul Speck, Claudia Ludwig, James Howard-Johnston, Walter Kagey, the Iranian scholar Parvaneh Pourshariati, and the Turkologist Peter Golden. Mitrofanov’s conclusion is that the alleged Tungusic-Manchu origin of the Avar aristocracy contributed to the preservation and spread of the Old Slavic language and Balkan Latin in his possessions.
