The article examines the phenomenon of one of the most popular subjects in the history of postclassical glyptics — «Diomedes (option: Diomedes and Odysseus) stealing palladium». During the Renaissance, gem engravers sought to approach classical ideals, and in their work, they copied or interpreted the works of carvers of ancient Greece and Rome. The basis for copying were several ancient intaglios with this subject that were in famous collections. Italian artists also perceived gems as the embodiment of the classics, and treated them as sources of artistic forms. In the next heyday of gem engraving, in the 18th century, the motive for the theft of palladium was also widespread. The article is illustrated with examples from the collection of Western European and Russian engraved gems of the Hermitage, which provides an opportunity to analyze various variations of the plot in glyptics during the Renaissance and neoclassicism.
