The article deals with the education of medieval historians at the Department of the History of the Middle Ages under the guidance of Prof. M. A. Gukovsky (1898–1971). The approach of Gukovsky to the study of historical phenomena in the aspect of the history of culture is highlighted, and in this aspect his lecture course is characterized. The autor shows how widely the specialists from other institutions were engaged in the education of medieval students. Attention is drawn to the requirement to rely directly on the original text of the source in seminars and when writing term papers. It is shown how the Department chief tried to provide language training for future academics in history. It is especially noted the prof. Gukovsky’s invention in proposing scientific topics and his stimulation of the work of students who showed research abilities. The connection between Gukovsky’s ideological and pedagogical attitudes and the academic tradition that went back to I. M. Graves is evidenced.
