The St. Petersburg Higher Women’s (Bestuzhev) Courses played a vital role in O. A. Dobiash-Rozhdestvenskaya’s formation and development as a teacher and scholar. She enrolled in the Courses in 1895 and stood out among her classmates from the very start for her intellect, preparation, and dedication; her hard work made her one of the most active participants in a seminar on the history of the Middle Ages, while her activism and the authority she acquired made her a leader at student meetings. The support of I. M. Grevs proved extremely significant: under his supervision Dobiash took her first steps as a scholar and then continued her studies after graduating from the Courses. It was Grevs who, in 1907, invited her to teach at the Courses and helped her obtain a grant to study in France. After returning to St. Petersburg, Dobiash-Rozhdestvenskaya continued to teach at the Courses, having expanded the scope of her lectures and seminars; after defending her master’s thesis (in 1915), she was promoted to professor. The documents and memoirs on which this article is based allow the author to trace the development and continuity of this outstanding scholar’s professional interests and her stance on social and political issues for more than twenty years.
